The psalmist is careful to say, “This God is our God…” He does not say a god or any god. There are many gods in the estimates of mankind, heathen gods, false gods as well as gods of our own making. The psalmist is careful to say, “This God.” Here we see one of the attributes of God, i.e. His greatness. (1) He is great in His praises of His people verses 1-2 and 10 indicate this to us. (2) He is great in His Soveriegn power verses 4-7. (3) His is great in grace and tender mercies — as verse 9 tells us.

here is the language of appropriation – Now the writer exclaims, “This God is our God…” He is ours, He is mine. As Christians, we can say that He is our God for two main reasons: (1) because He has given Himself for us. many, many Scirptures tell us of this great truth. (2) because we have made Him our God. He has loved us, died for us and reached out to us and we have responded to His love and wonderful salvation. he called and we answered.

Here is the thought of continuation – How long wil the wonderful union of God and His people last? The psalmist says in verse 14 that it will last, “for ever and ever”. Here is the reminder that what God has promised He will do.

Here is the promise of direction – In this great verse, the psalmist not only speaks about the end of the journey and gives unto us the assurance that we shall be with the Lord, but he speaks about our moment by moment daily experience of fellowship and communion with the Lord. read again the last part of this verse, “He will guide us even unto death.”

Here is the assurance of glorification – “He will be our guide unto death”. This thought has been examined and some have indicated that the word “unto” also carries with it the thought of “over…through…beyond”. Our Lord will not only go with us unto death but will go beyond the death us. Psalm 23. Look up II Corinthians 5:1-2. When we examine and give thought to this verse 14 in Psalms 48, we are awakened to the thought of the pilgrim-soldiers marching through life with the joy of the Lord and rejoicing in song.

If you are not familiar with the verses in Psalm 48 that have been put to music this would be a good time to seek them out and learn to sing them. Look at the way the psalm begins, “Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised…” We should be singing the marching song to glory.
