One must take time and read carefully through this chapter. Someone has indicated this chapter to be “love in the social realm.” Within this chapter is some amazing information of our relationships with one another and within the local New Testament church. If you have not read this chapter of late please take a few moments and look carefully at the wording found there. However there are three verses in this chapter that is very noticeable in our thoughts and emphasis on this 30/60 anniversary celebration.
They are verses 7; 17; and 24. Verse 7 reads, “Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the Word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.” Verse 17 reads, “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls; as they that give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.” Verse 24 reads, “Salute all them that have the rule over you, and all the saints.”
Here are three amazing verses packed with wonderful instruction for those of us who love and embrace the teachings of God’s Holy Word. These verses have a word that pose a problem for many and that word is rule. However Colossians 3:15 gives us a good definition of this word, “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which you are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” The idea of the word rule here is the word referee which gives to us a good explanation of what the Holy Spirit is saying to us. God desires for us to do thing decently and in order. Someone has to guide us and God has placed in Scripture those who shall perform these duties
RESPONSIBILITY is the emphasis given in verse 7. The word is Remember. Many times in Scripture this word makes reference to support for those who are called to guide us in spiritual things. There are a number of references regarding this thought in the New Testament. Verse 7 is encouraging us to take our Biblical responsibility for those who “watch for our souls”.
ACCOUNTABILITY is the second word found in response to verse 17. Here we find the word “obey” which is troubling to some who have not observed the entire verse. This verse tells us that our leadership must give account for our souls. This is an amazing thought when we think of the load one must carry that is called and sent by God to help bring souls to Christ. We too have a responsibility for the Scripture states that we should make the job of this minister a joy and not to bring grief.
RESPECTABLILITY is the word that perhaps should appear with verse 24. Again the word rule is the word of authority. We are told however to “salute” those in authority. I have been told that when a military person salutes that they are saluting the authority of the rank that one may wear. This perhaps is what the Scripture is indicating to us that we are to salute the authority of the rank that one may wear. One does not take this authority but it is given to him/her. In this case it is the call of God. As we honor our Pastor and wife today let us not only show our responsibility, accountability but also our respectability
